Keeping Your Child Safe

The faculty, staff, and administrators of St. Mary’s Catholic School help to ensure a safe school environment for all students.  All doors are locked and monitored by our own in house Closed Circuit TV which records 24/7 and is always viewable in the main office during school hours. School building access is limited to those who are employed by St. Mary’s and/or have key cards which are only programmable in house.

All new employees of St. Mary’s Catholic School, part-time or full-time, certified and non-certified, has been subjected to background checks (that include past employers and references) before being hired. The principal may also extend suitable background checks to volunteers who regularly visit/work at St. Mary’s that come into contact with students.

As mandated by the Diocese, all individuals who have contact with children must attend and complete the Child Protection Training and all follow-up training every year thereafter.  This means teachers, aides, coaches, staff members, classroom helpers, drivers, field trip monitors, and concession stand workers at games. etc. This process ensures the safety, protection, and care of minors and is a Diocesan requirement for anyone interacting with children in the School or Church, professionally or voluntarily.

Fire, Storm and Lock-down drills which follow the Illinois School Emergency & Crisis Response Plan are practiced throughout the year, and fire evacuation procedures are displayed in all classrooms.  Emergency procedures, aligned with Archdiocesan policies, are clearly articulated to all staff members.

In the event of an emergency or school closing, St. Mary’s School uses School Reach as an emergency notification system.  We will be also using the schools (this) webpage as a means of communication as well when applicable.
